Big Docs Energy.

More

Hello! I'm Lucy.

I'm a Technical Writer who cares about good documentation. I live near Bristol, UK.

I have an interdisciplinary background spanning software, linguistics, content strategy, and healthcare. I like to think I work at the intersection of human experience and technology.

My varied background gives me unique insight: I've worked as a junior developer, a product owner, a product and documentation writer, and an Occupational Therapist in the NHS. I am a big nerd, and I love fantasy and science fiction (my special interest area is Star Trek and I co-host a Punk Star Trek podcast called A Good Day To DIY).

I am also big into permaculture, vermiculture, sustainable horticulture and agriculture, traditional hedgelaying, solar punk, and soil punk.

I like solving problems, growing things, and helping people.

Skills

Technical Skills

Experience working with: Ruby/Rails, Sinatra, Javascript, Typescript, node.js, React/Redux, SQL/SQLite/PostgreSQL, Docker, RSpec, Capybara, Cucumber, Cypress, Github, Bootstrap, Semantic & Material UI. RESTful architecture, MVC, BDD/TDD, generic APIs, accessible & progressive web apps.

Extensive experience with Salesforce, RIO, CernerWorks, Millennium, ProductBoard, Notion, Jira, and Confluence.

I have built docs from scratch using the Docs As Code method on MKDocs and Hugo, and have a working knowledge of multiple other existing static site generators. I love doing comprehensive documentation audits, and finding the right metrics to glean meaningful analytics about a docs set. I have an undergraduate degree in Linguistics and Anthropology, and an MSc in effective communications for people living with post-stroke aphasia (language loss). I'm always interested to learn more.

My current role is leading a team of Technical Writers and building docs as an interdisciplinary product with Product Management and Docs Engineering. We work on a custom-built, Django-based documentation platform with multi-tenant support, SAML authentication, and integrations with GitHub, AWS, Slack, and OpenSearch. It's predominantly Markdown with some really snazzy bits and I'm lucky to work with such talented people.

Keen Volunteer

Food co-op, bike shelter, vegan community kitchen, elderly persons' home, cat rehoming centre, co-founded London's only all-womxn track cycling team, annual Macmillan Cancer Support bake sale, fundraising for the Alzheimer's Society, Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver & Gold awards.

I was a mentor at HackMed 2019, and until recently volunteered with Age UK Hertforshire. I provided 1-1 support for older adults, helping them gain confidence and skills with digital devices and video calling. Since then, I have also volunteered regularly with the Wells Food Bank, and at the North London NHS COVID-19 vaccination hub. I now also volunteer with the brilliant people at Ngombor Community Development Alliance thanks to Liz Argall.

I write & self-publish gender neutral science fiction in my spare time, play bike polo, and used to run a not-for-profit DIY punk & hardcore record label. I'm proudly AuDHD and training to become an EMCC-qualified coach.
